Team lead at the Ethereum (ETH) Foundation Péter Szilágyi has confirmed Dec. 4 as the expected date for the network’s forthcoming Istanbul hard fork. Further stating that the hard fork will activate at block #9069000 in a release note for the latest Geth update made in preparation for the hard fork.
The Istanbul Hard Fork is arguably the most anticipated Ethereum hard fork of the year. This hard fork is a series of forks that will transition to Ethereum 2.0, a proof-of-stake based Ethereum network. Most notably, the hard fork will roll out 6 backward-incompatible changes that will improve the network, including preventing potential ddos and spam attacks on the chain and allowing interopability with Zcash (ZEC).
While consensus has been largely acheived for the fork, be prepared for any possibility that may occur
- If you are a node operator, update your node with the latest release.
- If you are a trader, expect volatility during the period leading up to the fork.
