1. Can you share a bit about yourself?
I’m Prthiv “Pip” Ratnam; A sound engineer, Music Producer, Multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and Digital Creative from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I got my start in the music industry in 2016, as a freelance audio engineer and composer across multiple studios in KL. I founded "AbstractNature" in 2019; an artist collective and production team that focused on running monthly Pop-up DJ events/parties and releasing music as an independent label. Apart from producing and engineering for other artists, I also perform and produce music under the name “Netunoblu”.
2. What inspired you to get into the crypto space?
After the collapse of the live music and events industry in KL in early 2020 due to the pandemic and lockdowns, I pivoted my business to focus solely on production work; establishing it as more of a production team/label.
In October of that year, I was approached by Vandal of DAORecords to join him in organizing a weekly event series called “Strictly Ballein'', that was funded by the $WHALE network. These events are run at a digital “club” parcel in Cryptovoxels and also broadcasted to the $WHALE Discord server. This was my first proper encounter with the crypto space, and it blew my mind!
After the first month of doing events in December 2020, my eyes were opened to the vast amount of opportunities that the crypto space held for musicians and artists; be it in the the NFT ecosystem or even via live streamed events and performances for these different crypto platforms.
3. Are there any current projects you’re working on that you can share?
I am currently working on my debut solo album, which is due in July 2021. Apart from that, my full-time work has now become focused on digital events coordination and DJ performances in the crypto-space! I never thought I would be able to re-apply the experience I had gotten in my years as a live events organizer and performer; let alone be able to collaborate with talents from all around the world and also make a living while doing so! I am also starting to get more involved in the NEAR Network and their Createbase Guild, and have been managing the Createbase “Learning Center'' parcel on Cryptovoxels.
4. What are your thoughts on the future of music and crypto?
I really believe that cryptocurrencies and all the wild ideas that have stemmed from these platforms/networks will be the future of the music industry. The industry has already been moving to digital platforms such as streaming services, online content platforms, and now streamed concerts/events.
It is only a matter of time until crypto-based music platforms such as Audius start to become the new “norm”; and NFT’s start to become a viable option for independent musicians to get their ideas and material out there, and truly have control of their own ideas, creativity, and products.
It is a very exciting time to be a tech-savvy music creative as there is still a huge untapped market full of potential for those who have the guts to come up with unique ideas, and the tenacity to execute them.
