How to Earn Points on Somnia Testnet
You can earn points through interactions on Somnia's Testnet, including: sending and swapping testnet tokens, completing quest campaigns like connecting your social media accounts, and referring others to join the campaign.
Key Takeaways
-
Somnia is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain focused on powering and connecting mass-consumer applications in the metaverse to serve millions of users.
-
It was developed by the Virtual Society Foundation (VSF), an independent organization initiated by Improbable, and is funded by MSquared.
-
The network recently launched the Somnia Testnet where developers can deploy applications and users can become familiar with the platform.

Somnia is a fast and cost-efficient Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible Layer 1 blockchain, built to serve millions of users and support mass-consumer applications like games, social platforms, and more. It claims to be fully capable of processing more than 1 million transactions per second (TPS) with sub second finality and sub-cent fees.
Somnia’s mission is to be the foundation on which applications can be scaled to web2 usage levels with support for millions of concurrent users while taking advantage of the decentralized properties that web3 offers. Other key objectives include open censorship-resistant systems, a completely decentralized environment where no singular party can control and hoard value, as well as composable systems where value is shared between all participants and collaboration becomes the culture.
Other than that, Somnia also wants to empower builders with the flexibility and space to create sustainable models of engagement and ownership that safeguard digital asset rights, while removing barriers for content creation and participation. The blockchain will initially focus on gaming, metaverse, and social experiences before expanding to sectors that can further serve user needs.
What’s Behind Somnia’s High-Performance
To achieve its high-performance level, Somnia implements four key innovations in its blockchain architecture with the first being accelerated sequential execution. Unlike parallel execution which executes transactions simultaneously, Somnia has chosen to use a single core that is supposed to go extremely fast. The blockchain also has a custom-built database called IceDB which uses performance reports for predictable read and write operations to further optimize these operations.
At the same time, a multi stream consensus design streamlines the data processing workflow by eliminating the need for a consensus mechanism within individual data chains. Each validator runs their own individual chain before submitting their final data to a separate consensus chain for validation. Lastly, Somnia deploys advanced compression techniques to drastically reduce the data size of transactions and better deal with increased node-to-node data traffic.
In order to build their vision of a blockchain that supports high levels of growth, Somnia is developing an ecosystem of omnichain protocols with seamless interoperability. The Somnia protocols will achieve the blockchain’s key objectives in the hopes of increasing the value and commercial viability of digital assets, and encouraging the development and experimentation for applications in the metaverse. Somnia has also created the Metaverse Browser to serve as a front-end for non-web3 natives by offering a user-friendly interface to interact with the network.
The Team That’s Building Somnia
The Virtual Society Foundation (VSF) is an independent organization initiated by Improbable and is behind the development of Somnia. Holding the role of Somnia’s founder is Paul Thomas, who was previously vice president of product management at Improbable.
The Somnia ecosystem will benefit from a $270 million ecosystem fund, supported by Improbable, MSquared (M²), a16z, SoftBank, Horizons Ventures, CMT Digital, and more.
How to Interact with Somnia’s Testnet Shannon
On 21 February, 2025, Somnia announced the launch of its Testnet, Shannon, which comes after the blockchain’s successful DevNet testing. Some of the key partners behind Somnia’s Testnet include Ormi, Thirdweb, Hyperlane, Dune, and Ankr. The Shannon Testnet will give developers the testing grounds to deploy applications that users can interact with while becoming more familiar with the blockchain.
Given Somnia’s vision to build the infrastructure for an on-chain world and its current Testnet stage, now is an ideal time to explore what the blockchain can do. However, do take note that at the time of writing, the Somnia team has not made any official announcements regarding a token launch or token airdrop. Therefore, following the steps below does not guarantee a future token airdrop allocation.
Step 1:
Head over to https://testnet.somnia.network/ and Connect your wallet.

There are a few wallets to choose from but we will be using Rabby Wallet. Choose your wallet and sign the message in the wallet extension pop-up.

Step 2: Add Somnia Testnet
Once you have connected your wallet, go ahead and Add Testnet to it. There will be another pop-up window where you can confirm and add the Somnia Testnet to your wallet.

Step 3: Get and Send STT Tokens
Now, it’s time to get some tokens. Request Tokens under Get STT and a small window will appear where you can click Get STT to send the tokens to your wallet. STT tokens are claimable every 24 hours.

After that, Send Tokens to friends in order to test the network. Input the amount and select to either paste a recipient address, send tokens to the Somnia team, or find a random address.

In this guide, we sent tokens to a member of the Somnia team.

Step 4: Swap Tokens
It’s time to Swap either PING or PONG tokens.

On the Somnia Swap page, choose to either mint PING or mint PONG in the bottom panel.

Once you have minted the tokens, you can proceed to input the amount for swapping and Approve the tokens.

Then confirm the Swap in your wallet.

Step 5: Join the Somnia Discord
Join the blockchain’s Discord to receive updates and connect with other Somnia community members. Click on Join Discord and you will be redirected to Discord.

Choose to Accept Invite and your Discord app or browser page will open to confirm that you have been added to Somnia’s Discord.

Step 6: Complete Quests
You can also complete quests to earn points on Somnia’s quest platform. Click Go Quest and you will be redirected to the quest page.

First, you will need to Connect your account.

You can then Start Questing.

At the time of writing, there are three ongoing campaigns. You can click on the quest to view more information.

The first quest is in relation to connecting social media accounts such as Telegram, Discord, and X. Within the quest page, you can view instructions for each step in the right panel such as the example below.

The second quest focuses on memecoins on Somnia.

The third quest is centered around STT tokens.

Step 7: Refer Others
On any page, click your wallet address in the top right corner.

You can then view your profile which also includes your referral link. Share this link with others and earn 25 points for each invited user.

Conclusion
Somnia is building a Layer 1 network that is optimized to power the metaverse and connect applications that can support millions of users. It is EVM-compatible, allowing developers to easily deploy applications built for Ethereum. Users can now interact with Somnia’s testnet, Shannon to learn more about the network and earn points in Somnia’s quest platform.
