How Does Terra Work?

Terra operates on a Proof of Stake system, a way to agree on data where users lock tokens to earn the right to check transactions. The network relies on a set of 130 validators who run full nodes — programs that verify every transaction. Users who do not want to run their own node can delegate their LUNA to these validators. If a validator misbehaves or goes offline, they may face slashing, a penalty that removes a small portion of the staked tokens to ensure accountability and network safety.

Terra was originally created by Terraform Labs. Following the 2022 network transition, the project has moved toward a community-governed model where users and independent developer groups maintain the protocol. Recent updates from Terraform Labs include the launch of a claims portal for users affected by previous network events as part of ongoing legal and bankruptcy proceedings.
